Guatemalan Finca Vista Hermosa '10

See more pictures of the farm and their operations on our trips page!

The Vista Hermosa plantation with our friend and owner Edwin Martinez (who has also written a monthly series in "Roast" magazine and has a great blog) produces a super premium Guatemalan coffee now enjoying world recognition.

We are buying Vista Hermosa green coffee beans directly from the plantation helping to support their excellent work.

Situated in the highlands, huehuetenango coffees are among the more coveted coffees of altitude from Guatemala. Finca Vista Hermosa is ecologically sound and healthy, a model for shade grown and organic plantations. One of the more desirable places to work in the Huehue region. Vista Hermosa takes great care of their workers, well above any certification. They pay more than any farm in the Huehue region as well as providing free health care and educational clinics. They have been a part of building local schools and roads when government funding could not complete the job. They are not a large farm, but definitely a cornerstone in the community. A world class operation producing some of the best Huehue coffee possible.

Tasting Notes:
Rich, clean and balanced! A full bodied cup, with a very smooth chocolate bottom with delicate fruity overtones. Consistently one of the best coffees out of Guatemala and used for the sample coffee at Ana Cafe from the Huehue region.

Roasting Tips:
We roast this one a little darker to get a smooth rich chocolate taste, a little lighter will bring more acidity and fruit.

Hawaiian Maui Mokka

New '10 crop!

We switched to the larger screen size of the Maui, last year we did the 14, this year we went with the 16. It will now roast very well in any home roaster, it is still high chaff so be a little careful.

We stocked up and are now able to offer a great new price!

Maui Moka originated at Ka’anapali Estate in Maui, an experimental coffee plantation project.  They transplanted several native coffees from around the world, looking to derive Hawaiian cultivars with unique flavors; the Maui Moka bean is derived from native Yemeni seed stock.  The Ka’anapali project went under in 2002 due to funding issues. In stepped a group of connoisseurs who rescued the Estate from developers, and rehabilitated the original plantings.

This is the second super-premium crop since 2002.

Like its true Mokka parent, it’s a phenomenally aromatic coffee.  Salivate in anticipation as the freshly wet grounds emit sweet, heady coffee fragrance laced with notes of Virginia tobacco and lush peach brandy.  Once fully brewed, the aroma is winy, very sweet and lightly herbal.  The cup is chocolatey with a note of sweet vanilla caramel, and the medium body has creamy texture reminiscent of Guatemala’s Huehuetenango coffees.  It’s an exceptional coffee experience!

Indonesian Org. Bali Kintamani Natural

Click here for more infoTasting Notes:
Full bodied and clean with low acidity this is one tasty coffee. This cup is very fruity, rich and smooth. Similar to the Bali blue moon except with a much fruitier taste.

Roasting Notes:
This is a light to medium roast coffee, darker roasts will mute the wonderful fruity tones of this cup. A quicker roast will give it a crisper cleaner taste.

For you Bali/Indo. fans this is a unique and wonderful find!

This is the natural processed Bali Blue Moon.

Produced by smallholder farmers inhabiting fertile volcanic highland areas in the heart of the Indonesian island of Bali. The farmers use shade trees such as Erythrina, Albizia, Tangerine, and Orange, which improves both yield and cup quality. Pesticides are never used on coffee farms in Bali, and all the fertilizers are 100% organic.

Coffee farmers in Kintamani are strongly organized through Subak Abian (SA), a traditional structure of farmer organization in the upland areas of Bali. SA plays an important role not only in agricultural activities but also in religious ones. Founded on the Hindu philosophy of "Tri Hita Karana" (meaning the three causes of happiness), the philosophy is all about the relation of the individual to God, to other men, and to his environment. Each SA democratically establishes its own written rules, the so called "awig-awig", and also works to form village coops.

A very rich, clean, and smooth cup with a nice sweet chocolaty finish. Light to medium bodied with low acidity, a nice daily cup. Hints of a slight smokiness/citrus can be found.

Roasting Notes:
Bali is a versatile coffees to roast. It delivers great flavor roasted to either side of 2nd Crack. Note - the beans appear lighter then the actual degree of roast compared to other coffees, due to the semi-washed processing - which gives beans an uneven appearance.

Hawaiian Kauai Coffee CompanyClick here for info about Vista Hermosa

The 2010 crop has arrived!

We have recieved our first Micro Lot from the Kauai Estate: The Mokihana is one tasty cup. Full bodied and sweet with a very chocolaty bottom and a slight fruity brightness.

Kauai Reserve is the top grade for Kauai coffee, accounting for only 10% (6% this year) of the annual harvest .

Kauai Coffee Company is one of the worlds most high-tech coffee plantations, which in part is why it tastes so good. Other factors include the warm Pacific sun, rich volcanic earth, abundant mountain rain, and cool tradewinds of Kauai combine to create ideal conditions for growing great coffee. The rest is left up to the cooperation of many people to support these plants and give them exactly what they need, a perfect balance between science and nature.

Kauai is one of the richer and fuller bodied coffees of Hawaii

The Kauai Coffee Company is the largest coffee estate in Hawaii. Kauai's harvesting period runs from mid-October through early December. They harvest 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, using three shifts -- a unique practice in the coffee industry. Due to the size of the estate and the existence of several micro-climates, they rely on daily scouting reports to select the fields with maximum ripeness.

This is the long awaited 2010 crop.

Each batch of coffee is graded and cupped, then inspected by the State of Hawaii Department of Agriculture. The DOA officially certifies each batch of coffee for inspectors for grade quality and origin.

A good value for an up and coming super premium Hawaiian coffee.

El Salvador Org. Las Marias 93
picture

El Salvador coffee, like many others, had struggling times in the late 90's to early 2000's due to the price of coffee, and political and economic strife. There were a handful of Co-ops that stepped up to help organize the coffee markets and help the farmers get back to work producing some very premium, tasty and profitable cups; Las Marias 93 is one of the best!

This is a great everyday drinker!

Tasting Notes:

This co-op produced El Salvador is very rich and smooth with a medium body, good sweetness, with a slight chocolate/molasses bottom. A slight acidity brings a very crisp and clean cup. A great cup with breakfast or a sweeter after dinner treat. This coffee is a mix of Bourbon and Pacas Arabica plants; which you may find some similarities in taste to our Nicaragua Pacamara or Brazil Joao De Campos.

Roasting Notes:
An easy roaster! Avoid really light roasts for it will be pretty earthy, very smooth and rich from a city plus to a full city; take it a little darker for a little bit more body and edge.

Uganda Bugisu Org Sipi Falls

SulawesiThis coffee consists of four strains of Arabica, two well known Kenyan Strains: SL14 and SL28 along with Jamaican Blue Mountain and Bourbon.

The Sipi Falls Coffee Project was initiated in 1999. It now incorporates over 5000 small-holder farmers, covering an area of over 2,000 hectares. Through training sessions and input distribution, farmers now realize the benefits of improved farming practices in terms of crop yields, cup quality, and revenues.

A great single origin espresso!

Tasting Notes:
This coffee seems closest to a brighter Rwanda. It has a very nice citrus acidity that is well balanced by a bakers chocolate bottom. You can pick up hints of spice and pepper along with the pleasant acidity of a Kenyan and the complexity of the Jamaican. A true winner for those who like a more complex yet still bright cup of African coffee.

Roasting Notes:
This coffee is highly dependant on the roast. If looking for a cup similar to a Kenyan, a quicker lighter/medium roast will give you a great cup; if you like the balance of brightness and body with those semi-sweet chocolate tones, a full city to just into the second crack will be lovely.

This is a great Rwanda Bourbon!

Rwanda coffees are mainly Co-op produced, this coffee is grown in the rich volcanic soil of Rwanda at around 3,300 feet to 6,500 feet. Rwanda Coffees are very clean washed Arabica Bourbon coffee plants.

Tasting Notes:
This one is smooth, rich and bright with a pleasant molasses body and a chocolate bottom. Clean and balanced this cup has delicate fruity overtones with a hint of cinnamon along with a nice African acidity.

Roasting Notes:
Easy to roast; you'll get a great cup at most roast levels. Lighter roasts accent the winey acidity and bright fruit, deeper levels deliver smooth, rich chocolate flavors.
